[Jul. 14th, 2006|09:10 pm] |
Lon nlijft voorlopig nog even in Rotterdam wonen.

Concert was ondertussen uitverkocht.
bye, Patrick |

| Sail |
[Aug. 20th, 2005|07:51 am] |
Last Wednesday I went to the opening of Sail in Amsterdam. The company I work for had chartered a partyship to take a selection of my colleagues and our customers straight into the Sail armada. It was a wonderful day, not in the least because of the beautiful weather.
In the morning we sailed out to pick up the Tall Ships in the harbour of IJmuiden. Actually not that much sail is used during Sail since using the ship's engine is mandatory. Still a very pretty sight to see all those ships in the morning light. The atmosphere was very relaxed as we made our way to IJmuiden. I had a few chats with the customers, one of which turned out to know quite a lot about ships since he had been sailing for the better part of his life. Lucky him that he got selected to be on board. Not all of our guests made it to the boat in time, so some had to be ferried to our ship later on. Not everyone was impressed with the armada though. These swans could not be bothered to move as the ships passed.
When the armada reached IJmuiden all the ships turned around and waited for the Tall Ships to start their journey to Amsterdam. Most of the ships in the armada were assigned to sail along with a particular Tall Ship. Our assigned ship was one of the last to sail out, so we got to see most of the ships pass us by before we left for Amsterdam ^_^ It's amazing to see that so many ships can sail close together without anything going wrong. This was one of the unusual moments where heavy traffic doesn't lead to road rage, although sometimes a horn was blown to prevent a ship getting crushed by a bigger ship.
So after we saw Tolkien, Sinterklaas and even a train pass by, we headed back to Amsterdam ourselves. It was an event I thoroughly enjoyed and I hope to do this again one day.
Transportation and traffic jams sucked. I don't want to waste many words on that, but suffice it to say that it took me two and a half hours to get from the docks to the trainstation.. and did I mention I was sunburnt and it was still rather hot? |

| working nine to five |
[Jun. 5th, 2005|02:48 pm] |
Well actually it's half past eight to five ;) Wednesday was my first workday at Intramed. The first few days have been a pleasant experience. The colleagues are a nice bunch of people and the atmosphere is relaxed. First thing I need to do is get acquainted with the software (Intramed sells software for therapists). I also have to learn about all the rules, procedures and protocols that our customers have to deal with in their profession, because those are also an integral part of Intramed. For now I'm reading the help-manual and listening in on customer calls. I'm gonna try and get someone to train me though, since that provides a much more efficient way of learning.
Lunchtime is always a good time, but it's even better at Intramed because it's free ^_^ And we can enjoy lunch in our own grand-cafe with its own bar! The bar even has a beertap, the benefit of which I noticed when I was offered a nice cool beer at the end of the workday on Friday :) One thing about the new job is not so great though: the commuting. I travel by train and bus, which takes me an hour and a half one way. So I'm trying to get a place to life near my work. Shouldn't take more than six months to get one I think, since the housing system in Waddinxveen works in my favor. I'll just have to wait for something nice and affordable. For now I've applied for two houses. Should hear more about that this week. |

| geen eigen huis |
[May. 9th, 2005|10:49 pm] |

| Patrick's got a brand new house |
[May. 3rd, 2005|10:13 pm] |
|
I found a place in Rotterdam, so it's comfortably close to Lonneke :) It's a maisonette, and it serves my needs perfectly (for the time being). The planning is that I move there in the last weekend of May. My new job starts the first of June, so that works out well. Rotterdam is closer to Waddinxveen than Vianen is. I will be glad when I'm all settled, cause I'm not really looking forward to the moving part ;) The place could use some painting and definitely needs some cleaning. I think I'll only have time for the latter, what with my study needing finishing and my job starting. But for the time being it'll be a good place for me to live and I'll try not to mind the orange/pink bathroom and the blue toilet too much ;) |

[Apr. 23rd, 2005|12:12 pm] |
Starting the 1st of June, I'm going to work fulltime at Intramed, a company that provides software for paramedical practices. I'll start my work at the service desk. After a training period of several months I'll also start working on projects for the company. I'm looking forward to getting started at Inramed, not in the least because sonjav works there as well. Thanks again for introducing me there sis ^_^ |

| voice over |
[Mar. 29th, 2005|10:17 pm] |
After watching an episode of Desperate Housewives tonight I came to a conlusion: I hate voice-overs in television series. The voice-over in Dead Like Me was one of the main reasons why I stopped watching it. I thought that the voice-over in Desperate Housewives wasn't so bad. But after a few episodes it started to irritate me again. The know-it-all attitude, the pauzes in the narrative before telling the clue as if the viewer hadn't guessed it already.. it annoys the hell out of me.
I really hope tv-show writers don't make a habit out of using voice-overs |

| play on words |
[Mar. 15th, 2005|12:21 pm] |
Found this 'somewhere on the internet'. Most of it is funny :)
The Washington Post's Mensa Invitational once again asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition.
Here are this year's winners:
1. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with.
2. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly.
3. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.
4. Foreploy: Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting laid.
5. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period.
6. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.
7. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.
8. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.
9. Hipatitis: Terminal coolness.
10. Osteopornosis: A degenerate's disease. (This one got extra credit.)
11. Karmageddon: It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer.
12. Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you.
13. Glibido: All talk and no action.
14. Dopeler effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.
15. Arachnoleptic fit (n.): The frantic dance performed just after you've accidentally walked through a spider web.
16. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.
17. Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit you're eating.
And the pick of the literature:
18. Ignoranus: A person who's both stupid and an as*hole. |

| ADSL for Africa |
[Feb. 26th, 2005|10:02 pm] |
Lonneke told me that she read a column about how lucky we Dutchies are that broadband connections are so cheap in Holland, for example as compared to the rates in South-Africa. It reminded her of platitudes like "eat your dinner; children in Africa would give their left leg for that!". Which in turn reminded me of all the telethons raising aid for Africa. I can see it now..
'Come on people, donate! It only means 5 minutes less surfing per day, and the children in Africa need it harder than you do for their education. Meet little Nelson who got his ICT degree through his broadband connection and is now responsible for stealing your job by outsourcing. And all thanks to the 'ADSL for Africa' program! So go ahead and donate a little of your datalimiet for children in need!'
Accidently, I understand that broadband connections are much cheaper relatively in France and Belgium. |

| computer troubles |
[Feb. 19th, 2005|12:59 pm] |
When I got home from work on Monday, I noticed that my computer had stalled completely. The monitor didn't get a signal and the pc didn't respond to reboot. Even after turning it off and on the problem remained. So I started troubleshooting to find out which component was the weakest link. After a lot of dis- an reconnecting, I ended up with either the processor or the main board. Since my hard disks and cd-rom players started acting weird as soon as I connected them to the main board, I figured this ruled out the processor as the culprit.
Next day I went to my brother to pick up a spare computer so I at least could get on-line. Because it only has 128 MB of RAM I couldn't use it to run my statistical program. So I needed a new main board fast. After some online searching and comparing, I dedided on this one. I picked it up on Thursday and Friday was Installation Day. By now I had completely disassembled my own computer, and had made several changes to my brother's pc, so installing new hardware was something to look forward to. When the board was in place and the devices were connected I started up the computer. Nothing much happened, apart from the fans spinning and the hard disks making noises as if they really didn't want to work today. Because the disks had spinned up before, I installed one of them in my brother's pc. It worked fine. So now it was either the processor or the power supply that was causing problems. I hadn't really paid attention to the latter, because devices seemed to work fine as long as they weren't connected to the main board.
So I went through the trouble of getting the power supply out of my brother's pc and connecting it to my new main board. And voila, it all worked like a charm. So I had to get to the shops quick to get a new power supply. I ended up with this one, which is nicely quiet and has some shiney leds build into it. Now my pc looks like an 80's discotheque at night :)
In the end, my investment in the new main board was unnecessary. But it has its advantages. This main board is newer than the one I had, and still compatible with my hardware. My old board couldn't handle faster and newer processors and memory, and didn't have things like USB 2.0 and S-ATA connections. My new board has. So if I want to upgrade in the near future I now have way more possibilities than my old board could offer. |

With the pope in the hospital and a lot of religious people praying for his well-being, I realised a fundamental flaw in saying prayers for someone. When you are religious you probably believe that god's ways are beyond comprehension of mere humans, or you believe that god doesn't meddle with earthly affairs any more. Either way, people praying for the pope to get better could be considered going against god's will.
If you believe that god has a plan for everyone, then surely the pope getting sick is all part of a divine plan. God knows best, and if god thinks it's time to call the pope to him then humans shouldn't try to stop that. Yet people are praying to god for some divine intervention in making the pope better. They are actually asking god to reconsider and foregoing the belief that whatever god decides is best. And if you believe that god takes no direct action in the everyday life of humans, then what's the point of asking for divine intervention? And why stop at the pope's case; there are thousands of people dying every day. If people aren't praying for them, isn't that a bit unfair? And if god is omniscient, then he doesn't need a reminder from people to know who is or isn't dying and who should or shouldn't.
Needless to say, I sometimes find that belief-systems are somewhat flawed ;) |

This weekend was the weekend of pressies and food (a.k.a. christmas). There was an abundance of food and no shortage in pressies. I got Sarah McLachlan cd's, cd-storagefolders, books on wine, the cardgame Saga and new slippers. But by far the best pressie is the one I got from Lonneke. She had the brilliant idea to contact my online friends and ask them for recipies. She printed out the responses and put them in a ring binder. So now I have my own personal cookbook \o/
So thanks to all who contributed ^_^ I will try out all the recipies (which might make Lon regret ever thinking up this pressie ;) ). And thanks to my wonderful girlfriend for giving me this very original pressie *HUG* |

| Sarah in the house |
[Dec. 14th, 2004|01:32 pm] |
No, sadly she's not here in person. But with the Sarah McLachlan dvd's that arrived today I can at least enjoy her music in audio and video. And not only her music, cause both dvd's (Mirrorball and A Life of Music) contain interviews with Sarah \o/ That will keep me entertained while I wait for the Afterglow dvd to arrive :)
They took their sweet time packaging my order at dvdsoon.com, but once sent it took only a couple of workdays to arrive at my house. And of course, SML is well worth the wait ^_^ |

| Sarah McLachlan in concert |
[Nov. 20th, 2004|09:20 pm] |
Last Thursday I went to see and hear Sarah McLachlan perform in Amsterdam. It was more seeing than hearing since the tickets sold out so fast that we ended up in row 28. But that was okay in two ways. First it meant that Sarah is very popular in Holland and that is a good thing. Second, the Pepsi stage where she performed isn't that big so we had a pretty good view on the stage after all. I like this venue. It has a comfy and intimate atmosphere, and the stage isn't too big so you keep a good overview.
The day started out well, since Saskia texted to warn me that Sarah was about to perform on the radio. I surely would have missed that so thanks again ^_^ Sarah sounded great even in the morning after her first gig. Yes her first gig, since she ended up doing two shows. Because the first one sold out so fast, probably to the surprise of both her and her management, they quickly scheduled another show on Wednesday. Which sold out as well. Sarah actually said during the concert that they didn't really know what to expect from Holland since she last performed here ten years ago as an opening act for The Bloodhound Gang (this caused a giggle from the audience). Well now she knows that she has a lot of fans over here ^_^ Anyway, she did a few songs and an interview on the radio. The interviewer was rather crap though enthusiastic, but Sarah sounded wonderful and spontaneous.
Lonneke and I would meet up with the others in a restaurant near the venue. But the trip to the restaurant turned out to be a small nightmare. I'll spare you the details, but we ended up walking poorly lit cycle lanes in the pouring rain for a frustrating forty minutes. Whereas two sites on the internet promised it would be a ten to fifteen minute walk. Luckily we had a shortcut on the way back. Friendly as the Pepsi stage may appear, their security personnel are flatout rude. Some people in our company brought their own drinks. Those were confiscated and trashed without question by the security gorillas. So if you have a long travel back after the concert, you will have to do without any drinks as far as Pepsi is concerned. This prompted Lonneke and me to boycott their bar.
This rudeness couldn't spoil our evening though. The evening opened with the talented Butterfly Boucher. Her performance and commercial skills prompted a lot of people to buy her cd, with or without autograph. And then the moment I had been looking forward to for a few moths. I've been growing into a Sarah fan for the last year, and that got me more and more excited for this show. Let me get one small disappointment out of the way first. In the lower regions of her voice, Sarah was overpowered by the band. I guess she wasn't in top shape because the music didn't seem to be too loud. When I listen to Mirrorball she never seems to have any problem letting herself be heard. But of course, on a cd they can tweak a lot of things to make the sound perfect. Anyway, it was only a minor quirk and Sarah sounded strong and confident enough in the higher regions of her voice. Except for one moment near the end of the show, where here voice failed for a second. But she turned that into a funny thing and the audience really didn't mind. Actually, the audience needed some time to warm up. But once some people started getting excited, the rest of the audience shed their inhibitions and cheered along.
Because she didn't know what kind of set to put together for her Dutch audience, Sarah decided to use her personal favorites. This turned out to be a good choice. Of course she played a lot of songs from Afterglow, but there were songs from Surfacing and Fumbling as well. And she did her rendition of Silence as well because this was such a big hit in Holland. Although my particular company (Buffy fans) would have preferred Full of Grace ;) She did sing a few of my favorites as well (Push, Hold On, Answer and Sweet Surrender) so I was a very happy fan ^_^ Sarah ended her show in an appropriate way by returning to the stage solo and sing a version of Angel behind the piano. It felt like a personal goodbye to her audience.
I really loved seeing and hearing Sarah perform live. Her songs always stand the test of a live performance, and so does she. I hope that with the warm welcome her Dutch fans gave her she will return to Holland soon :) |

[Nov. 11th, 2004|09:55 pm] |
